Dayton Dragons News Release
DAYTON, OHIO-Cincinnati Reds infielder Miguel Cairo will join the Dayton Dragons tonight on a major league injury rehabilitation assignment. Cairo is on the Cincinnati Reds 15-day disabled list with a strained left hamstring.
Cairo suffered the injury on April 14 at Washington. He is eligible to be activated at any time.
Cairo has played in four games with the Reds this season, going 1 for 9 with one run batted in. Cairo, who will turn 38 years old tomorrow (May 4), is in his third season with the Reds, his 17th year in the major leagues, and his 22nd year in professional baseball. In 2010 with the Reds, he batted .290 with four home runs and 28 RBI in 91 games. Last season, he hit .265 with eight homers and 33 RBI in 102 games.
Cairo broke into the major leagues with the Toronto Blue Jays in 1996. He has also played for the Chicago Cubs (1997, 2001), Tampa Bay Rays (1998-2000), St. Louis Cardinals (2001-'03, '07), New York Yankees (2004, 2006-'07), New York Mets (2005), Seattle Mariners (2008), and the Philadelphia Phillies (2009). He has played in 1,424 major league games and 786 minor league games.
A versatile player, Cairo has played in more than 700 games at second base but has also seen significant time at third base, first base, shortstop, and the outfield. A native of Venezuela, he was originally signed by the Los Angeles Dodgers as a free agent in 1990.
Specific plans for Cairo's playing time in Dayton have not been announced. He will not count toward the Dragons' 25-man roster.
Cairo becomes the 20th major league player to join the Dragons on assignment. Others have included Joey Votto, Homer Bailey, David Weathers, Kent Mercker, and Jared Burton. Pitchers Jose Rijo and Edinson Volquez also pitched for the Dragons on assignment from the Reds as members of the Dragons roster.
The Dragons are home tonight at 7:05 p.m. against the Lake County Captains. The series concludes on Friday at 7:05. The Dragons open a four-game series at home against Fort Wayne on Saturday at 7:05.
